The widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) is raising concerns about potential job losses across various industries. One sector facing scrutiny is college admissions offices, where AI could replace human staff.
AI in College Admissions
The College and University Professional Association for Human Resources conducted a study in April 2023, examining 12,042 admissions employees across 940 institutions. On average, these colleges employ over a dozen admissions staff members each. With more than 4,000 degree-granting institutions in the U.S., AI seems poised to affect approximately 40,000 jobs.
Admissions processes are primarily driven by data: test scores, GPAs, and personal essays. AI excels at sorting and analyzing these massive amounts of information quickly. The technology can effectively assess the quality and sincerity of resumes and recommendations, as well as originality in essays.
AI’s Role Beyond Sorting
AI can enhance the evaluation process by considering factors beyond academic performance, such as geographic diversity, family income, and life circumstances. It can be programmed to ignore traits like race or ethnicity, which are restricted by law.
Factors such as athletic skills, legacy status, or even musical talents can be evaluated by AI, granting it the ability to model incoming classes and predict long-term success. Using AI in admissions could increase transparency and provide reassurance to various stakeholders, ensuring that admissions decisions are unbiased.
The Shift for Admissions Officers
For the existing 40,000 employees in these roles, AI could redefine their responsibilities. Historically, these staff members have assessed applicant data and made recommendations. However, incorporating AI into their workflow might allow more objective evaluations, reducing personal biases in decision-making.
Colleges and universities could benefit from running a parallel admissions process with AI, alongside their current methods. Comparing accepted applicants between both processes might offer valuable insights.
