Early Football Beginnings
Tammi Carr vividly recalls her son’s longing looks from the sidelines. The Carr family had a rule for CJ Carr: he could only play tackle football starting in seventh grade. Until then, he was to engage in flag football, coached by his dad. While CJ’s friends transitioned to tackle football in sixth grade, CJ stayed true to flag football, despite his pleas to join his friends.
By watching from the sidelines and helping with first-down sticks, CJ learned patience. When he finally donned the pads, he found a lifelong passion. “I want to go to practice every day, all day,” CJ expressed. Football became an inseparable part of him.
Family Legacy and Unexpected Path
CJ Carr’s football journey seemed preordained, given his family’s rich football history. His grandfathers, both College Football Hall of Famers, shaped his background. Tammi’s father, Tom Curtis, was an acclaimed safety for the Wolverines, while Jason’s father, Lloyd Carr, coached Michigan, obtaining five Big Ten titles and the 1997 national championship.
Despite these strong ties to Michigan, CJ chose Notre Dame. Raised near Ann Arbor, he surprised many by selecting a school considered a rival—Notre Dame. His arrival at Notre Dame marked his commitment to forge his own legacy.
Notre Dame Success
In 2025, CJ Carr began his starting quarterback role at Notre Dame by throwing 2,741 yards and 24 touchdowns, placing Notre Dame at No. 10 in the Associated Press rankings. Despite narrowly missing the College Football Playoff, he earned second-team freshman All-America honors.
With his second season approaching, CJ is under a larger spotlight. Notre Dame is ranked fourth in the preseason poll, and CJ is seen as a Heisman Trophy contender.
Mental Toughness
CJ’s mental toughness was cultivated early. As a child, he was intensely competitive, which sometimes led to emotional challenges. His father, Jason, emphasized the importance of avoiding excuses and maintaining composure, shaping CJ’s mental resilience.

The Carr family’s connection grew stronger when CJ’s younger brother Chad was diagnosed with DIPG—a brain tumor. Chad’s love for life influenced CJ profoundly, shaping his understanding of true hardship.
After Chad’s passing, the Carr family established the ChadTough Defeat DIPG Foundation, providing support for families fighting the disease. CJ carries Chad’s spirit with him, dedicated to making him proud.
Leadership at Notre Dame
CJ Carr’s leadership at Notre Dame reflects his readiness. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman lauds CJ’s preparation and play calling on the field.
Having grown alongside his teammates, CJ fosters unity and actively engages alongside fellow players—whether during training or team outings.
Notre Dame quarterbacks coach Guidugli recognizes CJ’s unique approach. Although he is one of college football’s prominent figures, CJ sees himself as part of the team, continuously striving to improve.
