The Raiders Franchise History

The Raiders franchise began on January 30, 1960, in Oakland, California. As a founding member of the AFL (American Football League), the Raiders joined the NFL during the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. The team relocated from Oakland to Los Angeles, becoming the Los Angeles Raiders from 1982 to 1994. Shortly before the 1995 season, the Raiders returned to Oakland, where they stayed until 2020.

The NFL approved the Raiders’ move to Las Vegas in 2017. By 2020, the team had officially relocated to this new home. Throughout their history, the Raiders have won three Super Bowl titles. Their first victory came in 1976 during Super Bowl XI, with John Madden as their celebrated head coach. The team’s subsequent Super Bowl wins occurred in 1980 at Super Bowl XV and 1983 at Super Bowl XVIII; Madden was not leading the team in these later successes.

Today, the Raiders compete in the AFC West division alongside the Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, and Los Angeles Chargers.
