In the upcoming Los Angeles mayoral runoff on November 3, the votes of more than 300,000 people who backed losing candidates in the primary will be pivotal. Among them, Spencer Pratt’s supporters, nearly 218,000 Angelenos, are crucial. Pratt, a Republican, gained traction mainly in Pacific Palisades and other conservative areas. Despite his loss in the primary, his voters can still influence the final outcome between Karen Bass and Nithya Raman.
Importance of Pratt’s Support
Dan Schnur, a USC, UC Berkeley, and Pepperdine political communications professor, emphasized that Pratt’s vote is crucial. Although insufficient to move to the runoff, in a tight contest, his followers could be decisive.
Karen Bass and Nithya Raman, both Democrats, need to appeal to Pratt’s supporters without alienating their liberal and progressive bases. These groups are expected to have strong participation in the midterm elections.
Campaign Strategies
Fernando Guerra from Loyola Marymount University suggests that addressing Pratt voters might require careful strategies. Gaining one Pratt vote might risk losing support from the candidates’ traditional bases. Therefore, relying on external groups and campaign surrogates might prove advantageous.
The Police Protective League, representing Los Angeles police officers, supports Bass and targets Pratt’s voters. They focus on neighborhoods where Pratt performed well, from the Harbor to parts of the San Fernando Valley and Westside. Their strategy involves emphasizing Raman’s record and her association with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
Nithya Raman, as the more progressive candidate, faces challenges in attracting conservative Pratt voters. She positions herself as the anti-establishment choice, appealing to those disillusioned by Bass.
Raman’s Campaign Focus
Despite her DSA affiliation, Raman runs a nonideological campaign. Her slogan, “A City That Works,” highlights basic city governance issues like fixing streetlights and potholes. She addresses these pressing issues at news conferences.
Raman also visits areas like the Palisades, affected by the recent fire, a significant event for Pratt, who lost his home and noted it inspired his mayoral run.
Bass’s Position and Challenges
Bass supports the city’s anti-encampment zone law, which restricts encampments near schools and libraries. This stance could appeal to Pratt’s supporters as it aligns with more conservative views.
On the other hand, Raman, often opposing the law, argues it merely displaces encampments. Both candidates have different stances on LAPD expansion; Bass has supported growth, while Raman has often opposed it.
Analysts like Guerra highlight the complexity in the campaigns. Despite predicting a potential voter split, they suggest focusing on broader demographics like Latino voters for a more impactful strategy.
Overall, Spencer Pratt’s voters, despite their divided loyalties and mixed feelings towards the candidates, remain influential. Their final decision could indeed tip the scale in the closely contested mayoral race.
