S. was born in Pakistan to Somali parents and moved to Canada as a child. Raised in a Muslim household, she became deeply religious following the tragic death of her brother. Seeking solace, she turned to her faith during a time when she was increasingly subjected to prejudice and aggression due to her Muslim identity.
Outside a tall apartment building in Western Canada, S. is the image of resilience, dressed in a black shirt and jeans. Despite the turbulent journey that led her to ISIS and back, she shares her tale with an openness that belies the horrors she has witnessed. We are not disclosing her full name or location, as her past connections with ISIS could expose her to risks.
From Devout to Radical
Her path to radicalization began after high school, when she joined a religious boarding school in eastern Canada. There, influenced by a returnee from Somalia affiliated with al-Shabab, S. embarked on a journey she thought was religiously justified but soon discovered was filled with peril.
Despite reservations about leaving Canada, S. decided to settle in a Muslim-majority country. With encouragement and financial support from her radicalized contact, she flew to Turkey in 2014. From Istanbul, she was driven to Syria, marking the beginning of her life under ISIS rule.
Arrival in Syria
In Syria, S. was stripped of her independence, subjected to coercion, and exposed to the brutality of ISIS. The utopia she imagined was shattered upon witnessing commonplace executions. Despite her surroundings, she refused offers to marry, which led to her confinement and mistreatment.
With the help of another Canadian woman, she managed an escape. S. contacted her family for the first meaningful time in months, only to find they were already informed by Canadian intelligence of her whereabouts.
Life in Syria
S. opted for a marriage that promised safety from the chaotic hostility that surrounded them. Unfortunately, her husband’s demeanor shifted over time. Amidst increasing violence and military action, she struggled to raise her daughter in an environment that had grown hostile.
With bombardments intensifying around them, their survival became a daily battle. Her daughter’s health suffered, a reminder of the grim reality of their surroundings. Navigating a world of few options, she sought refuge in a deteriorating Raqqa, where conditions grew dire.
A Fateful Decision
Eventually, S. faced the possibility of leaving ISIS territory. The Kurdish forces made an offer. Women, children, and the wounded could surrender. S. chose surrender over a doomed fight, paving the way for a potential return to safety.
Becoming an Informant
In Kurdish custody, S. began aiding authorities by providing information about ISIS activities. Her intelligence helped identify and save children from the hands of ISIS, a crucial step toward her redemption.
Assisted by efforts from diplomats like former U.S. Ambassador Peter Galbraith, she worked tirelessly to ensure children like Aminah found safety beyond violence.
Returning Home
After being briefly detained by the Kurds, S.’s daughter was able to return to Canada, facilitated by diplomatic ties. S.’s efforts in these matters earned her the chance to re-enter Canadian society, though separated from her daughter during initial proceedings.
Today, S. lives a life removed from her past. Her contributions to law enforcement persist, aiding authorities in tracking ISIS affiliates. Her daughter, despite fragmented memories, now navigates a quieter existence in Canada, dreaming of a future as a scientist or astronaut.
S.’s story underscores her journey from radicalization to a new beginning, serving as a reminder that survival and redemption sometimes stem from the most unexpected places.
