The View co-host Sara Haines strongly opposed socialism on Wednesday during a heated discussion. Joy Behar, her co-host, described Democratic socialism as a mere “buzzword” for democracy and affordability. This debate comes amidst tension between the show and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Co-hosts quarreled over White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt’s remarks about Gen Z. With recent electoral victories for socialism and far-left candidates, Behar argued that Republicans misuse the term, framing Democrats as communists.

During a recent episode, Haines said Millennials are less economically advantaged compared to their parents. She cited a 115% rise in home prices from 2005 to 2025 and job disruptions due to AI. While socialism attracts some young people seeking larger government support, Haines emphasized informed voting. She warned against platforms proposing extreme measures like eliminating law enforcement, prisons, and borders, equating such ideas to anarchy.
An aide for Mamdani recently criticized ABC executives after Haines called Mamdani-backed congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier an antisemite during a The View episode. Mamdani’s team had suggested featuring socialist candidates on the show, which was declined.
Mamdani wielded significant political influence when three candidates he endorsed—Brad Lander, Claire Valdez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier—defeated Democratic establishment rivals in New York congressional primaries. On June 24, co-hosts Alyssa Farah Griffin and Haines challenged Mamdani-backed candidates’ actions and statements, noting Chevalier’s participation at an anti-Israel rally following the Hamas terrorist attack against Israel on Oct. 8, 2023.
Mamdani-backed candidate Chevalier stormed out of an interview when confronted about past social media posts. Chevalier is projected to secure a congressional seat in the upcoming general elections.
Post-remarks, an aide for the mayor reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with ABC executives, potentially affecting future appearances. An insider claimed The View seldom features non-elected political candidates.
On “Jesse Watters Primetime,” Leavitt remarked that Gen Z and younger generations were raised with material ease, contradicting foundational U.S. values. Watters questioned if laziness and education played roles, with Leavitt citing both and “liberal indoctrination.”
