In New York, Thea Frodin is preparing for a significant milestone in her tennis career. The 17-year-old will face Elena Rybakina, the No. 2 player in women’s tennis, in her first U.S. Open singles match. Frodin’s journey is unique, having previously portrayed Serena Williams as a body double in the movie King Richard. Her tennis skills on set are now transitioning to the real courts.
Frodin expressed her excitement for the opportunity during a phone interview, stating, “I’ve worked so hard to try and get to this level, and to have an opportunity like this is special for me.” Her path to the U.S. Open was paved by winning the USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ 18s National Championships, earning her a wild card entry.

Her tennis and acting cross paths again, drawing similarities with Serena Williams’ swings due to her familiarity with the tennis legend’s playing style. Frodin reflected on her experience on set, working alongside stars like Will Smith, “It was super cool for me and truly special to play the role of someone I admire.” Smith earned an Oscar for playing Richard Williams, the father of Venus and Serena Williams.
Frodin faced challenges adjusting back to her personal playing techniques after embodying Serena’s style. She humorously noted, “It’s a great person to replicate, but my parents were a little bit upset because I was playing like Serena.” Despite this, she managed to return to her unique playing form.
This match against Rybakina marks Frodin’s debut at the WTA Tour level. Previously, she participated in the U.S. Open doubles and tried qualifying for Miami. Beyond tennis, Frodin is open to continuing her Hollywood experience, maintaining her dedication to both fields. She shared, “My focus has always been tennis, but acting life was enjoyable, and I wouldn’t mind it as a side gig.”
