The Tennessee Titans announced that linebacker Cedric Gray has entered the NFL’s concussion protocol following a UTV accident over the weekend. Gray sustained a concussion along with minor injuries during the incident in Tennessee.
“Over the weekend, Cedric Gray was involved in a UTV accident in Tennessee and sustained a concussion and minor injuries,” the team noted in their statement. “We look forward to Cedric returning to the field soon and in full health when he clears the NFL’s concussion protocol.”
The Titans are gearing up to face the New York Jets on Sunday, marking the start of the season. Head coach Robert Saleh will lead the Jets against his former team. With Gray in concussion protocol so close to the opener, his participation in Week 1 seems doubtful. Players must complete the NFL’s return-to-participation process, which includes several phases, to be cleared for play.
Gray, who was drafted in the fourth round in 2024, is entering his third season with the Titans. Last season he delivered an impressive performance, recording 164 total tackles, which ranked him fourth in the NFL. Additionally, he achieved seven tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, four pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, and a sack in 16 games. Pro Football Focus (PFF) rated him with an overall grade of 78.9, placing him as the seventh-highest among 88 qualified linebackers. His run defense was particularly noteworthy with a 92.7 grade, the second-highest in that category.
Anticipations for Gray were high for the upcoming season, considering his Pro Bowl-level play last year. However, the Titans will begin the season without him. This absence increases the responsibility on veteran Cody Barton, third-year player James Williams Sr., and rookie Anthony Hill Jr. to fill in during Gray’s absence.
