Tom Selleck recently opened up about the conclusion of the popular series Blue Bloods. Despite being one of the top-ranked shows, the cast had already agreed to a 25% salary reduction to ensure its continuation. Selleck revealed these details in a conversation with Ted Danson on the Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast.
During the podcast, Selleck shared that the show had completed 15 seasons with 293 episodes. He described the experience as a “labor of love” for everyone involved. Blue Bloods stood out because the team avoided the pitfalls of egos and miscommunication that often plague long-running series. “A lot of shows become miserable to work on,” he noted, highlighting the challenges with egos and demand-driven tensions in other productions. However, Blue Bloods was different. Knowing his role as the family’s patriarch, Selleck made it a point to set a positive example on set.
In its final year, Selleck shared that the cast was eager to return for one last family dinner, even after taking significant pay cuts. Despite falling out of the top 100 shows, Blue Bloods maintained a strong sixth place ranking in its 15th year. Selleck emphasized that no one wanted to leave and expressed pride in the cast’s consistency over the years, hinting that it could be something of a record to have the same cast for such a long period.
Selleck expressed his frustration when the show ended, speaking to TV Insider about the show’s ongoing success. He acknowledged the potential of Blue Bloods to remain popular despite challenging time slots, describing it as “wildly successful.” Reflecting on this, Selleck was cautious not to turn bitter but expressed how the show was somewhat taken for granted due to its consistent performance.
The actor also mentioned decisions and plans post-series. Although there is talk of a spin-off titled Boston Blue featuring Donnie Wahlberg, Selleck expressed doubts about revisiting his role as Frank Reagan. His focus remains on maintaining the legacy of Blue Bloods rather than reprising his character in a similar setting.
