Tom Selleck’s Journey to Starring in ‘Magnum, P.I.’

During a recent podcast with Ted Danson, Tom Selleck shared insights about nearly rejecting his iconic role in “Magnum, P.I.” A conversation with fellow actor James Garner influenced his decision to take on the role, despite initial reservations.

Selleck explained that he was initially unhappy with the studio’s insistence on his involvement due to a previous contract. The original script for the show, created by Glen A. Larson, portrayed Thomas Magnum as a flawless character with glamorous companions and a Ferrari, which did not appeal to Selleck.

James Garner offered Selleck critical advice: “You don’t have much power, but if they want you, you’ll never have more power than you do right now.” This prompted Selleck to protest the original character concept. Garner’s input was pivotal in Selleck’s decision to pursue a revised version of the show.

“I don’t want to be Rockford, but I want to do something like that, where the guy is fallible,” Selleck emphasized to those developing “Magnum, P.I.”

Selleck’s persistence led to significant changes in the series. He worked closely with co-creator Donald P. Bellisario and requested a character with depth and humanity. Bellisario responded with a revised script that Selleck described as the best TV movie script he had ever read.

The actor revealed that his pushback on the initial script was risky. He told interviewer Charlie Rose that failure to adapt the script could have tarnished his career.

“My lawyer said I’d have a choice of three submissions for ‘Magnum, P.I.,'” Selleck recounted. By then, he had gained recognition from the miniseries “The Sacketts.” He further exerted his influence by auditioning writers, an unusual role for an actor.

Despite disagreements over the show’s title, with the addition of “P.I.” due to legal concerns, Selleck remains attached to the character of Magnum, acknowledging the uniqueness he brought to the role.

Selleck expressed that the role was a pivotal turn in his career, acknowledging that the risk was worthwhile. His success with “Magnum, P.I.” demonstrated the value of advocating for a character with complexity and heart.
