Tom Steyer Supports Transgender Athletes in High School Sports

California gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer has voiced his support for transgender athletes competing in high school sports. In a podcast released Sunday, Steyer emphasized that excluding transgender youth from athletics could intensify existing mental and emotional challenges.

“I’m totally in favor of trans athletes in high school,” Steyer told “I’ve Had It” podcast host Jennifer Welch.

Steyer highlighted the vulnerability and stress faced by transgender kids, noting that nearly half of them have attempted suicide. He argued against denying them the benefits of team sports.

In a conversation with CBS Los Angeles, Steyer criticized those opposing transgender athletes, labeling such opposition as part of a “right-wing attempt” to undermine vulnerable individuals.

Steyer is one of many Democrats vying for the governorship as Gov. Gavin Newsom nears the end of his term. Other Democratic contenders include Antonio Villaraigosa, Katie Porter, and Xavier Becerra. Republicans Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco are also competing for the role.

Porter has argued that youth sports should be about character building and teamwork. Becerra emphasized protecting certain classes under state law, which permits participation based on gender identity.

Some candidates expressed more nuanced perspectives. Matt Mahan criticized the politicization of the issue but acknowledged concerns about fairness. Villaraigosa referred to the debate as a “non-issue” but opposed discrimination and suggested a stance against certain competitive scenarios.

Betty Yee and Tony Thurmond both support inclusivity, with Thurmond strongly backing transgender athletes. Republicans Hilton and Bianco wish to reverse current legislation allowing transgender participation.
