Tony Romo’s future with CBS appears uncertain. Romo’s recent arrest for operating while intoxicated (OWI) has cast a shadow over his career as a lead NFL analyst for the network. OutKick recently reported doubts within CBS about retaining Romo even before this incident, especially with the upcoming Super Bowl in 2028.
Over the past three seasons, Romo’s reputation has suffered. Critics have cited his lack of preparation and awkward interactions with his co-host, Jim Nantz. According to Puck News, Romo’s arrest might hasten his exit from the network. The media industry consensus suggests that he will not return.
“Romo won’t be back,” insiders speculate.
Legal complications add to the situation. Despite the possibility of CBS using a morals clause to sever ties, Romo’s contract, which guarantees him $18 million annually until 2030, could lead to legal disputes from his team. Nonetheless, CBS is not obligated to return him to the airwaves.
Romo’s potential departure opens up a valuable position alongside Jim Nantz. J.J. Watt is filling in for the interim after a promising year in broadcasting. If successful, CBS may consider offering Watt a full-time role. The network could also pursue prominent figures like Troy Aikman, Kirk Herbstreit, or Greg Olsen. Each has contracts ending soon, and CBS might opt to strengthen its lineup before the next Super Bowl.
Aikman stands out as an appealing choice, given his exceptional skills in NFL commentary. However, attracting Aikman away from ESPN might require a substantial financial offer, reportedly in the realm of $25 million annually. Olsen, currently second in command at Fox, shows potential for a leading analyst role. While Herbstreit represents a less likely option due to his association with college football and ESPN, CBS may still consider him as a candidate.
For Romo, finding a new home might prove challenging. Despite more streaming platforms entering the NFL broadcasting space, interest in Romo seems low.
