Family Dinner Turns Tragic
A man killed eight relatives, including four children, before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound near Billings, Montana. The assailant, identified as Alan Smith, 44, had been asked by his parents to leave their home. He returned on Sunday, where he opened fire, according to Brad Ireland, whose former wife and two children were among the victims.
Details of the Incident
Smith targeted his grandmother, parents, sister, and four children, then set the house ablaze. Law enforcement tried to intervene, but the house became engulfed in flames. On Tuesday, investigators confirmed the deaths of eight individuals, including Smith, who had shot himself.
The victims represented four family generations, from a seven-year-old child to a great-grandmother in her 90s. Jennifer Mercer, a family friend, provided this account. An attempt was made to contact Billings Police for comments outside regular business hours.
Background on the Suspect
Described as a “hermit” by Ireland, Smith stayed in his room playing on his computer. Ireland highlighted previous red flags that went unheeded. Smith attended Eastern Washington University but struggled to maintain employment. He had no criminal records in either Montana or Washington.
He resided with his parents for years before being told to move out. The attack occurred on the evening he returned, during a family dinner. Ireland stated that Smith was not known for physical violence but could be verbally abusive.
Victim Profiles
Among the murdered were Ireland’s ex-wife, Megan Ghekiere, and their children, Owen, 13, and Chloe, 7. Also killed were Ghekiere’s two stepchildren, Landon, 15, and Charlotte, 12. Originally from Seattle, Megan moved to Montana after her divorce six years ago and remarried.
Megan’s parents, Dana and Barb Smith, followed her to Billings. Her elder mother lived in a nearby retirement home. Adam Ghekiere, Megan’s husband, learned of the shooting via a dispatch radio. On arrival, he discovered the home ablaze and later confirmed the deaths of his family members.
Community Support Initiatives
In response to the tragedy, community members created GoFundMe accounts for the victims’ families. Jennifer Mercer, a neighborhood friend, highlighted the loss of Landon and Charlotte in her fundraising effort, garnering over $60,000 by Wednesday.
Michael Solberg established another page for Adam Ghekiere, requesting support for funeral expenses and counseling. Contributions exceeded $90,000. Solberg noted Adam’s dedication to aiding others and now needs similar assistance.
Charlotte, Smith’s daughter, was confirmed by police as the individual who called 911 during the event. Adam remembered her fondly with their endearing exchanges of affection.
