In a surprising political shift, Democrat Allison Montgomery unseated Republican state lawmaker Phillip Rigsby to become Alabama’s first transgender lawmaker. This victory took place in a district consistently supporting Trump in previous elections.
Montgomery will represent Alabama House District 25, encompassing areas in Madison and Limestone counties. These counties previously gave Trump significant victories, with a 9-point win in Madison and a 43-point lead in Limestone in 2024. Trump also succeeded in these areas during the 2020 and 2016 elections.
“I’m going to work especially hard for those who hate me, because they deserve a better Alabama as much as anyone,” Montgomery stated. She emphasized the importance of focusing on real issues rather than culture wars.
Rigsby, the former Republican incumbent, raised concerns during his campaign about Montgomery’s ability to govern due to her being transgender. He argued that transitioning alters perspectives on policy and legislation. Montgomery, however, denounced these remarks as distractions from real issues facing voters.
“We the people are tired of attempts to distract us with culture war issues, whether we’re in a minority group or not,” Montgomery said in highlighting her campaign’s focus on grassroots values and policies.
