Retirement speculation has surrounded Kansas City Chiefs’ standout, Travis Kelce, in recent years. At 36, he is already recognized as one of the top tight ends in NFL history. Nevertheless, Kelce decided to return for another season, signing a one-year, $12 million contract in March to play for Kansas City in 2026.
One of the main reasons for Kelce’s decision to continue was his close relationship with Patrick Mahomes. Their strong connection has been evident during training camp sessions. During a media briefing on Wednesday, Kelce discussed Mahomes’ impressive performance as the quarterback recovers from a torn ACL and LCL. “Everybody knows I love that guy,” Kelce stated. “That’s a brother to me. I’m so proud of the way he handled adversity from last year to right now. We still have about a month until the first game, but if you see him out here, he’s enjoying the game, competing at a high level, and not thinking about the knee. He’s playing his tail off and leading us.”

Mahomes suffered a tear to both his ACL and LCL during a Week 14 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers at the tail end of last season. This injury prematurely ended his season, and the Chiefs subsequently lost their next three games, marking their lowest record (6-11) during Mahomes’ tenure.
Nearing 31 years old, Mahomes is recovering from the most severe injury of his career. There were doubts about his readiness for Week 1 and concerns that the injury might affect the 2026 season. However, throughout training camp, coaches and teammates have praised Mahomes. He appears in peak form with no signs of lingering effects. All indications are that Mahomes will be ready when the Chiefs face the Denver Broncos on Monday, Sept. 14, at Arrowhead Stadium.
