Trump Accuses Vandals Despite Evidence of Construction Errors

President Donald Trump recently announced that the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool had reached 70 percent capacity after repairs. With this update, he threatened jail time for anyone who vandalizes the site. Trump stated on Truth Social that the pool looks good at its current fill level, warning, “Any Vandals that try to prove the point otherwise, will GO TO JAIL!” He emphasized increased surveillance, noting security cameras had been installed.

The situation revives earlier disputes about the cause of significant damage to the pool’s lining. Federal prosecutors had previously dismissed a criminal case against David Hearn, an Olympian in canoeing, after determining the damage was due to rushed installation rather than vandalism. Documents from the Interior Department indicated that the flaws arose from efforts to hastily complete the project before the America 250 celebration.

Doug Buchanan, director of media and public relations for DC Courts, revealed to Newsweek that multiple vandalism cases were filed but dismissed before reaching court. However, Trump continues to blame unnamed vandals for prior renovation issues.

Norm Eisen, Hearn’s attorney and co-founder of the Democracy Defenders Fund, criticized Trump’s scapegoating. He condemned the repeated waste of taxpayer money and the misuse of public resources by the administration.

Trump highlighted in his post that the pool had not functioned properly since its construction in 1922, alleging problems with leaks. He anticipated improvements as long as no further vandalism occurred. Trump asserted that vandals had previously inflicted extensive damage, citing a “vast area of cut and slashed pool surface” and claimed nearby grass had been “scarred by poison” with the numbers “86 47,” though the turf had been replaced.

Water resumed flowing into the Reflecting Pool on October 12 despite ongoing construction. The project, initially costing $1.5 million to $2 million, evolved into a larger expense with peeling issues shortly after completion. The National Park Service noted that the water might appear cloudy temporarily during refilling.

Federal prosecutors countered Trump’s vandalism claims, attributing the damage to contractor errors. The DOJ had initially pursued charges against Hearn but later dismissed the case after receiving information that undermined the vandalism theory. They noted that damage spanned the pool, questioning the likelihood of extensive vandalism. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated the damage came from a botched installation before America 250.

D.C. Superior Court Judge Todd Edelman subsequently dismissed Hearn’s case with prejudice, preventing case refiling. Hearn had previously described observing existing damage while near the Reflecting Pool.

Trump repeated his allegations in a subsequent Truth Social post, supporting them with video footage and media segments, challenging the prosecutors’ conclusions. Despite evidence, he insisted vandals were responsible for the pool’s issues.
