President Trump joined United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, D.C., for a discussion on American mining at the State Department on August 7, 2026. The State Department has announced a new initiative aimed at ending ‘birth tourism,’ an action that intensifies Trump’s efforts against birthright citizenship. This citizenship grants American nationality to children born in the United States.
The State Department’s statement emphasized that ‘citizenship is not a commodity’ to be obtained by exploiting U.S. immigration laws. It declared collaboration with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to tackle birth tourism and protect the immigration system’s integrity.
The creation of this task force followed President Trump’s signing of two executive orders on August 6 to restrict birthright citizenship. The orders came after the Supreme Court overturned Trump’s previous attempt to curb citizenship for U.S.-born babies on June 30.
The Birth Tourism Prevention Task Force will scrutinize visa holders globally. It will identify and act against those involved in or facilitating the practice by revoking their visas. The task force also aims to dismantle networks profiting from such schemes.
The initiative has already resulted in the revocation of over 600 visas from foreign nationals involved in birth tourism. The task force, under Trump’s second executive order titled ‘Ending Birth Tourism,’ assigns presidential powers to the Secretaries of State and Homeland Security, mandating them to halt this practice. Birth tourism refers to foreign nationals entering the U.S. on nonimmigrant visas to give birth, or facilitating such entries.
Trump’s other executive order, ‘Continuing To Protect The Meaning And Value Of American Citizenship,’ outlines specific categories of children who do not qualify for birthright citizenship. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), having previously filed a successful class-action lawsuit against the Trump administration, opposes these executive orders. It urged a federal judge in New Hampshire to affirm the protection of citizenship for babies covered by its class-action suit despite the new orders.
