Trump and Meloni Clash Over G7 Meeting and Iran

President Donald Trump has taken to social media to mock Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for her alleged requests for a photo with him at the recent G7 Summit in France. Trump criticized Meloni for not supporting U.S. efforts in the conflict with Iran, pointing out her refusal to allow U.S. forces to use Italy’s air bases.

Meloni refuted Trump’s claims, expressing her surprise and disappointment at his behavior. She stated, “I don’t know why the president of the United States behaves like this towards his allies.” She also emphasized the importance of defending Italy’s national interest.

Trump accused Meloni of seeking to mend relations with the U.S. following its military success in Iran. He claimed that Italy’s lack of cooperation came despite substantial financial contributions from the U.S. to protect NATO allies, including Italy.

Meloni responded on Instagram, affirming that her popularity depends on her commitment to Italy’s interests, not her relationship with Trump. She maintained that Italy’s use of military bases follows established agreements.

Once allies, Trump and Meloni’s relationship has cooled. Italy faces a 15% tariff on EU imports due to past U.S. trade policies. Meloni has openly criticized Trump’s comments on foreign policy, particularly regarding Iran.

Despite tensions, Meloni has consistently spoken against Iran’s nuclear ambitions, advocating for diplomatic negotiations to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

U.S. and Iran have paused talks amid renewed conflict in Lebanon, involving Israel and the Hezbollah group, backed by Iran. An agreement signed by Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian requires a halt to military actions, including in Lebanon, to ensure the agreement’s continuation.
