President Trump announced Friday a deal with Denmark to enhance the U.S. military presence in Greenland. The agreement, which follows months of tension, maintains Danish control over the Arctic territory.

In a social media post, Trump stated the agreement grants the U.S. permanent control over security and other needs in Greenland, fully addressing U.S. concerns. The administration will immediately start increasing its military footprint on the mineral-rich territory.

Negotiations involved U.S., Greenland, and Denmark officials and aimed to tackle Trump’s security concerns regarding Greenland, home to around 56,000 people. Initially, the issue took a back seat as Trump focused on military actions in Venezuela and Iran. This agreement presents a foreign policy success for Trump before the midterm elections.

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen confirmed the deal’s signing by the three governments. Parliamentary approval from Denmark and Greenland is pending. Frederiksen emphasized the agreement respects Greenland’s sovereignty and self-determination.

Greenland PM Jens-Frederik Nielsen noted the deal benefits all parties and considers Greenland’s interests.

Allies resisted Trump’s idea of purchasing Greenland, citing its strategic importance. Denmark and Greenland rejected the sale, condemning U.S. intelligence activities. European nations and Russia also opposed the U.S. stance.

Trump expressed optimism about future collaboration with Denmark and Greenland, stating that strategic and protective measures would ensure security in the region.

The deal restricts non-NATO bases in Greenland and prohibits investment by adversaries like China and Russia. A State Department official, speaking anonymously, highlighted these provisions.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised the agreement as a “historic deal” and a significant advantage for U.S. security.

Historically, the U.S. has maintained a military presence in Greenland, playing a critical role in North America’s defense. The U.S. built several installations during the Cold War, including the Pituffik Space Base, which supports missile and space operations.

Greenland’s position off Canada’s northeastern coast, with much of it in the Arctic Circle, has made it strategically vital since World War II.

While Trump had aggressive interactions with Denmark, officials remained open to expanding U.S. interests in Greenland. Imran Bayoumi from the Atlantic Council warned that Trump’s actions have strained NATO and European relations, harming the U.S. image abroad.
