President Donald Trump announced the establishment of a U.S. Space Academy, intended to train astronauts, engineers, and military personnel for missions to Mars and beyond. During his speech at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, he emphasized the need for an entire generation of skilled service members and engineers to meet ambitious space exploration goals.
Trump stated that the academy would adhere to high standards, comparable to top military institutions like West Point and the U.S. Air Force Academy. He committed to selecting a location for this new academy soon. An executive order was signed to formally initiate the creation of this institution.
Michael Kratsios, assistant to the president and director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, shared on X that the Presidential Commission on the U.S. Space Academy will design a federal academy led by NASA. The commission aims to deliver rigorous technical education combined with leadership, discipline, and public service commitment.
Potential locations for the academy include Houston, Colorado Springs, Cape Canaveral, and Huntsville. The final decision awaits recommendations from a newly formed presidential commission, which will consider the academy’s structure, mission, and site-selection process within 120 days.
Trump’s U.S. Space Academy differs significantly from NASA’s Space Camp. The proposed academy will provide formal education and training for careers in the space sector, unlike Space Camp, which is a short-term educational program. The academy is more akin to a military service academy or university, designed to be a pipeline for future space professionals and government personnel.
