Recent tensions between President Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have escalated from a dispute over a photograph to a more significant diplomatic issue. The Italian foreign minister canceled a scheduled visit to the U.S. following Trump’s comments about Meloni. Trump asserted that Meloni had ‘begged’ him for a photo during the G7 summit.
Meloni firmly denied these claims. She stated, ‘Neither I, nor Italy, ever beg,’ labeling Trump’s assertions as ‘completely unfounded.’
On Tuesday morning, Trump posted on Truth Social, reiterating his stance. He claimed, ‘Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni asked, over and over, for a picture with me during the G-7 meeting in France.’
Trump further accused Meloni of struggling with her popularity in Italy. He linked this to Italy’s reluctance to support the U.S. and Israel in their military conflict with Iran. Trump stated, ‘She wouldn’t even let us use Italy’s landing strips or runways, a great logistical inconvenience.’
He continued, ‘Now, after the United States defeated Iran militarily, she wants to be friends again in order to get her “numbers up.” No thanks!!!’
