Trump Endorses Darline Graham for Senate Seat

President Donald Trump announced his endorsement for Darline Graham to run for a full term in the U.S. Senate, succeeding her late brother, Lindsey Graham. Trump declared his support on social media, emphasizing her lifelong success and assuring she has his complete endorsement if she chooses to run.

Trump stated he discussed the potential campaign with Darline Graham in the White House. Insiders suggested she had shown private interest in seeking the Senate seat. Lindsey Graham’s death last weekend led to a reshuffle of candidates vying for this position. Russell Fry, Nancy Mace, Ralph Norman, and Pamela Evette were notable figures considering a run. The special primary filing period runs from July 21 to July 28, with the primary set for August 11.

Plans for Lindsey Graham’s funeral include services in Washington on July 28 and South Carolina on July 29. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham to complete her brother’s term, ending in January.

Darline Graham expressed her honor at being the first woman from South Carolina in the Senate. At a news conference, she was joined by staff and advisors, visibly moved by the appointment. She reflected on her brother’s support throughout her life, promising to honor his memory.

Lindsey Graham, who passed at 71, was reportedly very close to his sister, who became his legal guardian at a young age after their parents died. He had never married or started a family, but she often appeared alongside him in public and in his political advertisements.

President Trump’s backing of Darline Graham suggests he seeks another ally in the Senate, especially after Lindsey Graham had been one of his trusted confidants. Although their relationship was not always smooth, Trump spoke warmly of Lindsey Graham as a familial figure.

Governor McMaster did not explicitly present Darline Graham as a temporary choice. However, a source noted that her candidacy was not initially considered. Senator Tim Scott from South Carolina refrained from endorsing a candidate officially but mentioned Darline Graham’s strong start, suggesting she could be a viable contender.

Despite Lindsey Graham’s substantial campaign funds, Darline would be limited to receiving $2,000 directly due to federal regulations. However, contributions to the National Republican Senatorial Committee could indirectly support her campaign heavily, according to former Federal Election Commission chair Bradley A. Smith.
