The Calgary Stampede, Alberta’s renowned rodeo and fair, is notable for its political pancake breakfasts. On July 2, members of the governing United Conservative Party hosted such an event, a day after Canada Day. Danielle Smith, Alberta’s premier, donned attire reminiscent of the American South, aligning Alberta’s discussions closely with the narratives of President Trump, the MAGA movement, and the United States.
During the breakfast, the premier flipped pancakes and addressed the crowd. She stated that immigrants, whom she referred to as “newcomers,” had increased government expenditures significantly. Additionally, she emphasized that the Stampede symbolizes essential Albertan values such as grit and determination, indirectly contrasting these with perceptions of inefficiency in Ottawa.
The event featured an unusual presence of Alberta separatists, who typically remain more reclusive. Groups like Albertans4Freedom and United Alberta Flags were present, advocating for Alberta’s secession to form an independent Judeo-Christian nation. They promoted a referendum scheduled for October 19, asking if Alberta should begin the process of separating from Canada. Premier Smith, while supportive of including the referendum question on the ballot, has not officially endorsed separation.
