President Donald Trump introduced a refurbished presidential aircraft at Joint Base Andrews. This new addition features a larger size, luxury elements, and a new red, white, and blue paint scheme. The aircraft is a Boeing 747-8i, donated by Qatar and modified for presidential use. It will temporarily serve as Air Force One while Boeing completes work on the delayed VC-25B replacement aircraft.
Trump emphasized the aircraft’s size as its most significant feature, stating, “The biggest difference is the difference in size. It’s like virtually double the size.” The aircraft’s commissioning flights will soon begin, as part of the final testing phase before it starts operational service. According to Air Force Secretary Troy Meink, “The safety and security of the commander in chief is our highest priority.” He mentioned that every requirement was carefully evaluated to ensure high standards for the presidential mission.
Frustrated by delays in Boeing’s Air Force One replacement program, Trump asked Qatar to use their new 747, noting its few flight hours. He compared the aging presidential fleet to newer aircraft operated by foreign governments. “Our country has to be represented properly,” Trump remarked.
The aircraft, adorned in Trump’s preferred color scheme of red, white, and dark blue, replaces the light blue-and-white design that dates back to the Kennedy administration. This updated design will become standard for the presidential and executive airlift fleet, including the VC-25B aircraft.
Trump praised the interior craftsmanship, calling the plane “considered the world’s most luxurious.” He suggested the aircraft could play a major role in the upcoming America 250 celebration, predicting a prominent flyover on July 4 over Washington, D.C. Trump’s vision for the event includes a display of fighter jets like F-22s and F-35s.
The Pentagon accepted the Qatari aircraft last year and has been preparing it for presidential service since. The interior required fewer modifications than the VC-25B program, allowing the timeline to progress more quickly. This jet will serve until Boeing’s next-generation Air Force One aircraft are completed in around two years.
Trump thanked the over 250 personnel involved in readying the aircraft and highlighted the initiative as an example of modernizing the presidential fleet. He noted it had lagged behind newer aircraft used by foreign leaders.
