President Donald Trump’s decision to exclude certain news outlets from the White House took an unexpected turn on Monday. During a televised ribbon-cutting ceremony, major networks boycotted the event, making his speech barely audible.
Footage from the conservative network Newsmax showed Trump at the event, marking the opening of a new White House helipad. However, without the usual presence of cameras and microphones from the White House TV press pool, the audio was inadequate.
“There’s no microphone because the pool cameras aren’t there,” a Newsmax presenter said during the broadcast. “So maybe… this is one example of it backfiring just a little bit.”
Trump revealed on Truth Social that CNN, MS NOW, and Politico were banned from the White House. He claimed these outlets were guilty of constantly reporting “FAKE NEWS.”
Other major networks responded by withdrawing from pool duty in protest of the ban. Bryan Boughton, Fox News Washington bureau chief and chair of the TV pool, communicated in a memo to the White House press corps that no substitute pool would be arranged. This memo was referenced by Politico.
The story is still unfolding, and more updates are expected.
