Fox News host Greg Gutfeld and the ‘Gutfeld’ panel explore President Donald Trump’s criticism of Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., concerning daylight saving time disagreements. As Americans adjust their clocks this weekend, the debate over daylight saving time remains unresolved.
Earlier this year, the House approved a law permitting states to adopt daylight saving time year-round. Despite its popularity with voters and Trump, the Senate has stalled progress on the legislation. The House passed the Sunshine Protection Act in July with bipartisan support. Most Democrats and Republicans supported the bill, passing it 307 to 117. However, its advancement has slowed in the Senate.
President Trump urged the Senate to pass or at least vote on the Sunshine Protection Act. Using social media, he claimed that most Americans prefer more evening light. He emphasized that people are tired of changing clocks.
In his effort to push the bill forward, Trump shared contact details of Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., urging the public to press Cotton to support the bill. Cotton opposed the measure, expressing concern over dark winter mornings for schoolchildren. The resistance from both parties in the Senate makes passage difficult.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., advocated for the Senate to take up the bill. He stated that more daylight would benefit families, businesses, and community safety. Despite the House’s support, the Senate faces a crowded schedule upon returning post-election. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., acknowledged the president’s strong stance but noted the absence of a clear path forward.
