Republican primaries in Michigan presented former President Donald Trump’s influence as a key factor. On Tuesday, in Michigan, Trump’s endorsement was crucial in the GOP gubernatorial nomination battle. Republican Rep. John James emerged victorious against businessman Perry Johnson, as reported by the Associated Press.
James, who had been endorsed by Trump in late June, has a notable background. He is a West Point graduate and former Army Ranger who flew Apache helicopters in combat tours during the Iraq war. He will now compete with Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat, in the general election to succeed Governor Gretchen Whitmer.

The GOP primary race against Johnson, who had previously run for governor and president, became tense. Despite Johnson’s heavy spending from his own resources, James stressed his work ethic and connection with voters as pivotal advantages. President Trump supported James with a campaign rally in Michigan. His endorsement power showed in GOP primary victories across states like Indiana, Kentucky, and Texas. Besides Michigan, Trump-supported candidates also saw success in key races in Georgia and Alabama, although there was a loss in a primary against billionaire Rick Jackson. In New York, Trump-backed Anthony Constantino won against Robert Smullen, highlighting the sway of Trump’s influence.
In South Carolina, regardless of the outcome, Trump had influence since he supported both Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette and state Attorney General Alan Wilson, with Wilson securing a landslide victory.
In Louisiana, Trump-backed Rep. Julia Letlow won the nomination after Sen. Bill Cassidy, who had voted against Trump in a previous impeachment trial, was ousted. Additionally, Trump’s endorsed candidate Andy Biggs triumphed in Arizona’s primary for governor.
