In Downtown Naperville, two well-known businesses are closing their doors. Everdine’s Grilled Cheese and the Nike store have announced their permanent closures.
Everdine’s Grilled Cheese Closing
Everdine’s Grilled Cheese, located at 24 W. Jefferson Ave., shared on social media that Friday will mark their last day of operation in Naperville. While no specific reason was provided for the closure, the owners expressed gratitude towards their loyal customers over the years. “We are so grateful for all our wonderful customers who stuck by and supported us through this last decade. It has been such a pleasure getting to know so many of you throughout the years,” the announcement stated.
The restaurant initially opened in November 2016. It rapidly gained popularity, averaging sales of 300 to 400 sandwiches daily. Kelly and Brian Herkert, the co-owners, were inspired to open their grilled cheese shop during a backpacking trip in Australia, where grilled cheese became a staple for quick, affordable meals. The menu offered diverse combinations, such as a mac-and-cheese stuffed sandwich and a Hawaiian-themed option with pineapple and ham. Patrons also had the option to personalize their sandwiches.
Although the Naperville location is closing, the Batavia store will continue to operate. Attempts to reach co-owner Kelly Herkert for further comment were unsuccessful.
Closure of Nike Store
The Nike store, a 4,600-square-foot retail space at 217 S. Main St., has also shut its doors. Katie Wood, Executive Director of Downtown Naperville Alliance, confirmed the closure. The store ceased operations on July 13.
First opened in November 2021, the Nike store was marketed as Illinois’ first Live retail operation, tailored to the local demographics. It primarily focused on women’s gear and apparel. Despite initial success, Nike has faced challenges competing with other brands. Recent reports indicate that Nike stocks have dropped by about 35% this year, despite marginally exceeding fourth-quarter revenue expectations.
Additionally, Nike has recently closed various retail locations and laid off 1,400 employees in April. Most affected were technology positions within their operations division. As part of broader cutbacks, Nike announced the closure of all Nike Studios, which were fitness gyms developed in collaboration with FitLab.
A representative from Nike did not respond to inquiries regarding the Naperville store’s closure.
New Stores Opening Downtown
While some businesses are closing, several athletic apparel shops have recently opened in Downtown Naperville. Vuori, a California-based athleisure company, established its presence in the former Eddie Bauer location in June. In April, FP Movement, a division of Free People, also opened a store.
“Be reminded that we had one of the biggest retail store opening years ever in 2025 with several new businesses already opening this year, including Free People, Lilly Pulitzer, FP Movement, Vuori, and Regenerate,” Katie Wood mentioned regarding the Nike store closure. “Businesses close all the time as part of an evolving downtown.”
