Americans traveling legally to Cuba are advised to prepare for significant disruptions caused by the ongoing blackout crisis, as stated by officials. The U.S. Embassy in Havana has announced that the country is experiencing a total power failure due to the collapse of its electrical grid.
The embassy warned, “All U.S. citizens in Cuba or planning to travel to Cuba should be aware and plan accordingly.” This recent outage is the sixth nationwide grid failure for Cuba in 2026, with three incidents occurring in July alone, according to reports.
Residents are facing extreme heat without access to air conditioning, forcing many to sleep outdoors near water sources to escape the high temperatures. Sunday saw a high of 93 degrees Fahrenheit, though humidity levels made it feel like 106 degrees.
Despite not being a major tourism destination, Cuba attracts visitors globally, including from the U.S. American travelers to Cuba are permitted under specific categories such as family visits, journalism, education, and humanitarian projects.
The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) allows travel for activities including “support for the Cuban people.” Due to the persistent power failures, the State Department recommended Americans bring portable battery banks, spare batteries, and nonperishable food and water.
In an advisory from May 2025, travelers to Cuba were urged to remain aware of their surroundings and avoid displaying signs of wealth, like expensive watches or jewelry, while also advising against physically resisting robbery attempts.
Cuba’s electrical grid has been aging, leading to recurrent blackouts and fuel shortages. Cuban officials have attributed the worsening energy crisis partly to U.S. sanctions, yet the cause of this latest blackout remains undetermined.
The U.S. Embassy noted that according to Cuban media, the reason behind the electrical grid collapse is unknown and the timeline for power restoration is unclear.
