Mike Huckabee, President Donald Trump’s ambassador to Israel, has urged the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for an attack on American journalist Heidi Levine in the West Bank. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also demanded action to curb settler violence. Huckabee described the assault on Levine, a Washington Post photojournalist, as a ‘despicable act of terror.’
Huckabee called for offenders to face lengthy prison terms. ‘Those who attacked unarmed reporter should spend years in prison,’ he posted on X. The Washington Post circulated footage of the incident on the same platform.
Rubio expressed concern, stating that the U.S. wants stronger Israeli measures against such acts. He emphasized the need to prevent future incidents, highlighting the Trump administration’s intention to communicate these expectations to Israeli officials.
Levine was covering Palestinian farmers near Abu Falah when attacked. The American journalist sustained serious injuries requiring medical treatment. Attackers stole her equipment as well, according to witnesses.
Jasper Nathaniel, who witnessed the assault, described Levine’s poor condition post-attack. Following this, Israeli police initiated an investigation. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu questioned the attacker’s identities, despite reports of them being Israeli settlers.
Huckabee’s reaction is notable as he supports Israel generally. Yet, he criticized settler violence, referring to a similar past incident as ‘terror.’ His latest demand for action underscores a push for accountability while maintaining overall support for Israel.
Rubio’s remarks reflect public dissent from the U.S. Secretary of State, adding diplomatic weight to calls for action. International attention on settler violence in the West Bank underscores wider scrutiny.
According to Yesh Din, an Israeli monitoring group, numerous attacks have occurred against Palestinians in the West Bank since the start of the olive harvest. The majority of investigations into these acts have not resulted in convictions. Recent assaults on European diplomats show continued tension and calls for accountability.
The statements highlight increased pressure on Prime Minister Netanyahu, especially amid an upcoming election. Congressional Democrats also press Israel to address violence and establish investigative mechanisms. The situation raises questions on how these criticisms will influence U.S. policy towards Israel.
