Videos and images circulating on social media show American sailors arriving in Pattaya, Thailand after a lengthy stretch at sea. Known as Thailand’s ‘Sin City’, Pattaya has hosted the USS Abraham Lincoln crew after their deployment lasting 286 days. This extended duration raised concerns about food shortages and mental health. President Donald Trump dismissed these apprehensions.
The USS Abraham Lincoln strike group, involved in U.S. naval operations during the Iran war, reached Chon Buri province for a five-day rest stop. The USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. docked at Sriracha, also in Chon Buri, while USS Robert Smalls arrived at Map Ta Phut, in Rayong province.
Pattaya officials held discussions with U.S. Navy representatives, laying out behavioral expectations for the sailors. Despite Pattaya’s reputation for sex tourism, it is rebranding as a family-friendly destination, featuring golf courses, malls, and outdoor activities like water skiing and skydiving.
The commanding officer of USS Lincoln cautioned against using prostitutes, as paying for sex breaches Article 134 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Violations would result in severe penalties.
Banners and billboards welcomed the U.S. personnel, who explored Pattaya’s attractions. More sailors arrived Thursday from Laem Chabang, chartering vehicles to explore for several days. Videos shared on Instagram revealed sailors interacting with locals, sparking comments on their appearance and behavior.
One TikTok video, liked over 2,000 times, shows a sailor dancing in a nightclub, generating empathetic responses from viewers. Others depicted sailors in bars and relaxing, drawing positive comments about Pattaya’s economic boost from their visit. However, a minor incident involved two American service members in a dispute outside a bar, handled quickly by Thai police and U.S. Navy officials.
The U.S. military history with Pattaya dates back to the Vietnam War era when thousands were stationed in Thailand near military bases. This visit is yet another chapter in that long-standing connection.
