The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to make history by spanning 16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This tournament, scheduled from June 11 to July 19, will feature 104 matches over 39 days in a new 48-team format, marking it as the largest World Cup to date. FIFA president Gianni Infantino described the event as “104 Super Bowls.”
On “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd, former USMNT defender Alexi Lalas expressed high expectations for the U.S. team. Lalas emphasized, “This is a generation that’s been given absolutely everything from a very young age, and with that comes higher expectations. America, you should expect your team to win this group.”
Team USA competes in Group D as the top-seeded team alongside Paraguay, Australia, and Turkey. Their first match takes place on June 12 against Paraguay at Los Angeles Stadium (SoFi Stadium) in Inglewood, California.
Veteran defender Tim Ream leads as captain, while Christian Pulisic stands out with 84 caps and 32 goals. The roster blends 13 returners from the 2022 World Cup with 13 newcomers, making it the fifth-youngest team the USA has ever sent to a World Cup.
Analysts predict that Team USA should lead Group D. Their toughest opponent might be Turkey, which defeated the U.S. in a friendly last year. Despite this, the U.S. remains favored in all three group matches.
If Team USA wins their group, they’ll advance to the new Round of 32, facing a lesser-ranked opponent. This scenario would be a first in U.S. men’s World Cup history.
Progressing to the Round of 16, the team could capitalize on home advantage, potentially making a historic World Cup run. The home crowd and a few lucky breaks could significantly influence their performance.
In previous tournaments, the U.S. exited at the group stage in three out of five World Cups. Now, with a talented young roster, playing on home soil, and an advantageous format, the conditions are set for a deep tournament run, with the only hurdle being their own performance.
