The U.S. women’s basketball team secured its fifth FIBA World Cup title by overcoming France with a 97-79 victory. Despite an initial 14-point deficit, the Americans took control in Berlin, dominating with a 30-12 third quarter. This achievement sets the stage for the team to seek a record-extending ninth consecutive gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
France initially had the upper hand, leading 31-17 early in the second quarter. However, the U.S. team’s experience and skill led to a decisive win. Tournament MVP Breanna Stewart contributed significantly with 22 points and 10 rebounds, asserting, “We’re the standard.” Her leadership was crucial for guiding the team through the tournament.
Head Coach Kara Lawson, who took over after the Paris Games, relied on a seasoned starting lineup for the comeback. Stewart became the first American to have a 20-10 game in a final since Lisa Leslie in 1998, playing a pivotal role in setting an example for younger team members. Olympic gold medalist Jackie Young also shone, scoring 18 points alongside six rebounds and five assists.
Caitlin Clark marked her debut senior global championship performance with 12 points from the bench. Lawson praised contributions from players like Clark, Rhyne Howard, and Angel Reese. “Aliyah Boston, how great was she in the semifinals and tonight?” Lawson reflected, highlighting the building confidence among players.
The team faced tough competition en route to the title, starting with a three-point win over Italy in group play. This victory was the closest since the team’s defeat in the 2006 semifinals. In the semifinals against Spain, the U.S. pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 76-66 win. Finally, against France, Gabby Williams of the Golden State Valkyries scored 16 first-half points but was limited in the second half.
Starting point guard Chelsea Gray remarked on silencing critics with the team’s performance, winning their matches by an average of 26 points. Notably, the team achieved this success without A’ja Wilson, who withdrew before the tournament began due to health reasons. Lawson mentioned that seven of the U.S. players were experiencing their first global championship in the 5×5 format.
Lawson emphasized the strength of USA Basketball and the depth of talent among the players, noting this wasn’t the typical team composition. This underscores the resilience and capabilities of the U.S. team in facing increased international competition.
