European soccer’s governing body, UEFA, continues its threat to boycott FIFA competitions. This decision stands despite FIFA’s apology for a failed plan to sell stakes in the World Cup.
On Thursday, UEFA reiterated its lack of confidence in FIFA president Gianni Infantino. The association stated that the conditions to retract its boycott threat remain unmet.
“UEFA’s associations were very clear about the conditions attached to the non-participation in FIFA competitions,” the statement read. “First, the proposals to sell off the major competitions had to be withdrawn. Secondly, assurances must be made that such attempts to alter the game will never occur again.”
Infantino faces criticism from multiple fronts. The global soccer players’ union, FIFPRO, accused him of abusing presidential power. The English Football Association also withdrew its support for his re-election. Amnesty International highlighted the crisis as a call for governance reforms.
FIFA and Infantino tried to show unity after a summit in Morocco, indicating support from top staff present. They apologized for errors regarding the commercial subsidiary plan. FIFA committed to preventing similar mistakes and expressed hope to restore confidence after the backlash caused by the abandoned project.
Despite Infantino’s retreat from the project, UEFA stated its position on FIFA leadership remains unchanged. A statement reaffirmed that staff support for Infantino did not alter their stance.
