The recent UFC event at the White House left a mark with its unique combination of sport and patriotism. Justin Gaethje emerged victorious, defeating Ilia Topuria to win the UFC lightweight title. He celebrated with a backflip off the cage and received congratulations from President Donald Trump and Melania.
UFC CEO Dana White emphasized that this event was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and not something the company plans to repeat. Despite the success in terms of merchandise sales and streaming subscriptions, logistical challenges and costs prevent a future repeat at such a venue.
Fighters toured historical parts of the White House, including the Oval Office. Gaethje reflected on the experience, particularly the view of the Declaration of Independence, before his walk to the cage. He earned $825,000 as a bonus for his performance and Fight of the Night honor.
President Trump stayed for the full event, engaging with the fighters and expressing satisfaction through his social media platform. The patriotic theme was further highlighted by the Marine Band and tributes to military personnel and first responders.
Despite minor controversies involving UFC fighters Sean Strickland and Josh Hokit, the event was largely seen as a success. White hopes the unique setting introduced new fans to the sport.
The UFC will resume its events in more traditional venues like Las Vegas with upcoming shows, including an anticipated fight during International Fight Week featuring Conor McGregor. Nonetheless, the immense cost and logistical hurdles of the White House event ensure it remains a singular occurrence.
