UK Pubs Stay Open Late for World Cup, Raising Concerns

“Football might be coming home but we’re making sure fans don’t have to,” stated Starmer. He emphasized the importance of letting pubs stay open until the final whistle. This brings benefits for both fans and the community hubs that pubs represent.

The British Beer and Pub Association felt thrilled about the decision. Simultaneously, the Night Time Industries Association viewed it as a chance to invigorate hospitality businesses.

British media referred to the situation as “England’s big all-nighter,” using terms like “Mextra time” and “Mexican rave.” While fans anticipated enjoying extended hours, police chiefs voiced concerns.

“Past tournaments show increased violent incidents during knock-out games,” noted the National Police Chiefs’ Council. Increased alcohol consumption directly connects to this rise, they added.

The World Cup bracket was known early, leading to criticism of the government’s timing. Police must adjust plans, extending officers’ shifts, affecting their community presence. Licensing laws usually stop alcohol service by 11 p.m.

The nation had already relaxed laws to allow pubs to operate later for specific matches. Yet, overnight kick-offs lacked arrangements until recently. The upcoming overnight match may last past 4 a.m.

Starmer dismissed ideas of cancelling school on Monday. Children should still attend, even if their team plays late. England’s head coach, Thomas Tuchel, jokingly suggested parents let kids skip school to watch.

Starmer lauded police flexibility, saying licensing modifications were timely once England’s last win occurred. Employers are managing sudden leave requests, with many expecting worker absences on Monday.

England fans celebrated Harry Kane's goal against Croatia.

Fans in pubs and at home prepare for Sunday’s match. “All of us need to go into work on Monday to celebrate England’s victory against Mexico,” said Baroness Smith.

Sir Keir Starmer plans to step down soon after difficult years as party leader, paving the way for Andy Burnham. Known for his laid-back style, Burnham’s leadership comes as England approaches key matches.

England fans have a history of unruly behavior across Europe, but stricter rules and game changes improved their image. Celebrations sometimes lead to disarray, especially after significant victories.
