North Carolina’s football program is facing significant attention off the field as it enters the second season under coach Bill Belichick. The focus has shifted to an investigation involving the team’s general manager, Michael Lombardi.
The University of North Carolina confirmed that Lombardi has been put on leave during a formal investigation announced by the school on Thursday. While specific details about the probe are limited, its initiation indicates pressing issues beyond the upcoming football season.
In a recent news conference, Bill Belichick refrained from commenting directly on the investigation, stating only, “We’re working through some things.” He emphasized the dynamic nature of the current period, implying that several matters need addressing over time.
“We’re at a particular time of the year now where there are certain things that are in play, and certain things that are in play that will happen later in the calendar year. So we’re taking it day to day and work through the things that are on the table right now,” Belichick noted.
The announcement from UNC was issued in response to concerns arising from the allegations that led to Lombardi’s leave as of July 27. The University of North Carolina’s Office of University Counsel has undertaken the investigation.
Michael Lombardi was seen on the sidelines before several games, including at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse, New York. His current status casts a shadow over the team’s preparations for the season.
Athletic director Steve Newmark commented on the investigation, emphasizing the importance of a thorough process but expressing a desire for expediency. “The university counsel’s office is going to have this go as quickly as possible,” Newmark said. He underscored the need to gather all pertinent information.
As the investigation continues, questions remain about its potential reach within the athletic department. Newmark did not confirm whether others are involved or if a separate College Sports Commission is investigating the Tar Heels’ football program.
UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts shared frustration over the attention the investigation has garnered, suggesting that it detracts from the university’s primary focus on student-athletes’ success. “I’m disappointed that we’re talking about this,” Roberts remarked. “We should be focusing on our student-athletes and their success.”
The Tar Heels concluded Belichick’s inaugural season with a 4-8 record. Amid these developments, Michael Lombardi has secured the services of attorney Tom Mars. Mars issued a statement asserting Lomardi’s readiness to cooperate with UNC and maintain his innocence.
“Michael hasn’t been told anything about the nature of UNC’s investigation and welcomes the opportunity to clear his name, which has already been sullied by baseless statements and innuendo on social media,” the statement read.
Mars voiced the expectation for a “swift, thorough, and fair” investigation while urging patience as the process unfolds.
