Underground Tunnel Discovery in San Diego
Authorities have revealed the discovery of an underground tunnel between Tijuana and San Diego. It was likely used for trafficking drugs, weapons, and people across the U.S.-Mexico border. During the investigation, drugs worth approximately $45 million were recovered.
Major Drug Seizures in July
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in San Diego seized over $67 million in illegal drugs throughout July, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The San Diego Field Office, overseeing seven ports of entry along the California-Mexico border, conducted these operations amidst efforts to secure the southern border.
“Day after day, our officers remain steadfast in their mission to protect our communities and secure our borders,” stated Sidney Aki, CBP San Diego Director of Field Operations.
During July, officers seized 8,359 pounds of drugs through 144 smuggling attempts.
Breakdown of Seized Drugs
- 553 pounds of fentanyl
- 36 pounds of heroin
- 2,572 pounds of cocaine
- 5,077 pounds of methamphetamine
The collective street value of these drugs was estimated at $67 million, according to DHS.
Notable Smuggling Incidents
Earlier in the month, a 22-year-old Mexican citizen was apprehended with 16 pounds of fentanyl, valued at nearly $240,000, concealed within an electric moped at the San Ysidro Port of Entry.
Weapons Seizure at the Border
CBP also intercepted a vehicle attempting to cross from Arizona into Mexico, carrying a rocket-propelled grenade launcher tube and additional weapons. Authorities recovered four rifles, an AK-style pistol, 16 AK rifles, multiple rifle magazines, stocks, and pistol grips.
