Unverified AI-Generated Video Claims Explosions on Iran’s Kharg Island

On August 31, 2026, President Donald Trump shared a video that seems to be AI-generated, showing explosions on Iran’s Kharg Island. However, Iranian sources have not confirmed any U.S. military strikes on the island over the weekend.

Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, saying, “Kharg Island being blown to smithereens!!!” late on Sunday. Kharg Island, located just 15 miles from the Iranian mainland, plays a crucial role in Iran’s economy, as it handles 90 percent of Tehran’s oil exports.

This development comes as Washington and Tehran exchanged strikes for the first time since late July. The U.S. is applying economic pressure and sanctions to push Iran into reaching a deal.

Hamid Bovard, the chief executive of the National Iranian Oil Company, dismissed Trump’s claim as “laughable,” stating that operations on Kharg Island continue as usual.

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), overseeing American forces in the Middle East, did not confirm an attack on Kharg Island. They reported “limited, precise action” against Iranian minelaying capacities in the Strait of Hormuz.

Capt. Tim Hawkins, CENTCOM spokesperson, mentioned that the U.S. targeted two Iranian missile launchers on Larak Island, one of Iran’s territories in the Strait.

Iran’s military reported a response by targeting two air bases in Jordan with ballistic missiles, claiming “heavy damage.” Additionally, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported on Monday that a tanker attempting to navigate the southern Strait of Hormuz was “stopped after being hit by two naval mines.”

This is an ongoing situation. Further updates are expected.
