Usha Vance, the second lady, has publicly addressed comments made by Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for the Michigan Senate, during an appearance on ‘Fox & Friends.’ The campaign for El-Sayed recently targeted White House aide Natalie Harp in a social media post, following an initial attack on Vance.
The controversy began after former President Donald Trump issued a symbolic name change for Lake Ontario to Lake America. In reaction, El-Sayed’s campaign posted on X, questioning when the change would become official. The post featured a manipulated image of the White House webpage, crossing out First Lady Melania Trump’s name and replacing it with Harp’s, drawing criticism from conservatives online.
This campaign spends an inordinate amount of time discussing the spouses of others, commented journalist James David Dickson on X.
Political commentator Melik Abdul criticized the post, labeling it sexist and misogynistic. Harp, a supporter of Trump’s policies during his first term, particularly his ‘right to try’ order, has been implicated in ongoing media speculations surrounding her relationship with Trump.
In another instance, El-Sayed referenced second lady Usha Vance’s Indian heritage in a comment aimed at Vice President JD Vance, questioning whether she would be joining him in a hypothetical trip back in time.
White House spokesperson Davis Ingle further criticized El-Sayed, highlighting his proposals to increase taxes and defund the police, and noted his previous comments disparaging American football and Thanksgiving.
