The United States Men’s National Team saw their World Cup campaign come to an end on Monday night, suffering a 4-1 defeat to Belgium at Seattle’s Lumen Field. Christian Pulisic, one of the team’s key players, took to the field despite a previous calf injury sustained during the group stage matches. Unfortunately, a second-half injury further hampered his performance.
Pulisic’s injury was significant enough that play was stopped so he could receive medical attention. Though he attempted to continue playing, it was evident that the injury hindered his capabilities. Pulisic was eventually substituted, showing visible frustration on the bench regarding his injury and departure from the match.
USMNT icon Landon Donovan expressed a stern view on Pulisic’s exit from the game. He commented that if he were in a similar situation, it would require force to remove him from the field, emphasizing his determination to play despite injuries. Donovan recalled playing through a torn hamstring against Ghana following the Algeria match, stating he preferred playing without mentioning his condition.
After the game, Pulisic informed Fox Sports’ Jenny Taft that he had either rolled his ankle or sustained a sprain. While he acknowledged needing recovery time, this sentiment drew criticism from fans and fellow soccer legend Carli Lloyd, who remarked that resting should occur post-career.
Outside of his USMNT duties, Pulisic is also a player for AC Milan in Italy’s Serie A. During the 2025-26 season, he scored eight goals and assisted four times. Heading into the 2026-27 season, beginning in August, Pulisic aims for further success.
Reflecting on the recent World Cup, Pulisic had high expectations following his stellar performance in 2022. However, attention shifted to teammate Folarin Balogun, who impressed by scoring three goals. Despite facing controversy for a red card in the Round of 32, FIFA lifted his suspension for the Belgium match.
As Pulisic progresses with his club career in Serie A, he has four years to develop further and hopefully reach peak form for the USMNT at the 2030 World Cup.
