A 17-year-old in Utah faces charges linked to the deaths of his mother and 8-year-old half-brother. Authorities apprehended him following a lengthy investigation, which included evidence analysis from search warrants and forensic testing. Police arrested the teen on August 14 after a 17-month inquiry. Charging documents from KSL show accusations of two counts of aggravated murder and obstruction of justice against the teen in juvenile court.
The state seeks to move the case to adult court. The teen remains unnamed due to his juvenile status. Police received a call on March 28, 2025, responding to a medical-assist alert at the family residence on Willowbrook Lane, where they discovered Jessica Orton Lyman, 44, and Eli Painter, 8, with fatal gunshot wounds. Efforts to save them failed, according to police reports.
An argument was recorded by a nearby camera on March 27 around 11:30 p.m. Certain voices heard correlate with those of the teen and the victims. A woman, presumed to be Lyman, reportedly shouted around midnight, followed by three gunshots, spaced apart and then in rapid succession, as per charging documents.
Additional footage showed a masked person matching the teen’s stature walking in the neighborhood early on March 28. Prosecutors suggest that the individual, wearing matching clothing seen on the teen previously, might have discarded the weapon along their path, possibly into the nearby Jordan River, as charging documents indicate. Dive teams and police conducted searches without finding firearms other than two BB guns in the teen’s room.
The investigation revealed gunshot residue on several of the teen’s clothing items. His DNA was allegedly identified under one victim’s fingernails and on the waistband of shorts Lyman wore when she died, as per KSL reports.
The investigation led detectives to examine the teen’s belongings, uncovering handwritten notes with references to ‘serology,’ ‘DNA,’ and ‘firearm testing.’ Detectives maintained the home’s security for evidence collection and investigation. The diligent examination included thorough reviews of video, records, and other leads.
The Saratoga Springs Police Department emphasized the lengthy analysis required for certain forensic tests before progressing further. These findings ultimately established probable cause for arrest, as detailed by Police Chief Andrew Burton.
The investigation involved the FBI, the Utah State Crime Laboratory, the West Jordan Police Department, and the Utah County Sheriff’s Office. Police continue to pursue interviews and analyze additional findings.
