For the first time in four years, Venus and Serena Williams returned to the court at the US Open on Friday night in Queens. The legendary sisters were initially set to reunite earlier this summer at Wimbledon. However, Serena, now 44 and making a comeback after several years away, had to withdraw due to an injury.
As they walked onto the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium, they received a massive ovation from the crowd. Serena’s jacket displayed her US Open titles, noting the doubles titles she and Venus won in 1999 and 2009. Their opponents were Taiwan’s Chan Hao-ching and Australian Maya Joint. Interestingly, Joint was just a toddler when the Williams sisters claimed their 2009 US Open win.
The first set saw a close contest, but Chan and Joint surged ahead to win it 6-3. The Williams sisters started the second set strong, maintaining momentum to force a tie-breaker needed to determine the winner. Despite having several chances to dominate the tie-breaker, Chan and Joint resisted. Ultimately, Venus and Serena secured the set, continuing the match.
Throughout the game, the crowd overwhelmingly supported the Williams sisters, cheering after every point. The match against Chan and Joint, who were only in their fourth event together, was intense. In the final set’s tie-breaker, Venus and Serena initially led by taking five straight points. Chan and Joint, however, mounted a comeback to win, concluding a match that lasted just over three hours.
The thrilling three-set match ended with scores of 6–3, 6–7(6), 7–6(10). This encounter demonstrated that the Williams sisters, already renowned in the sport, continue to be formidable opponents.
