Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, announced the arrival of their fourth child, Alec Neel Vance, born on a Sunday morning. The family expressed their joy in a statement posted on X, mentioning that both Usha and the baby are healthy, and their other children are thrilled to have a new sibling.
The birth took place at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, where Usha Vance is recovering. The couple extended their gratitude towards the medical staff for their care and support.
JD and Usha Vance, married since 2014, are also parents to three other children: Ewan, who is 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4. Alec’s birth marks a rare event in U.S. history, as it is the first known instance of a vice presidential family having a child while in office in 156 years. The previous occurrence was when Ellen Colfax gave birth to Schuyler Colfax III during her husband, Schuyler Colfax Jr.’s tenure as vice president to Ulysses S. Grant in 1870.
Vance revealed in his book, “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith,” that he had wished for another child for years, though initially, Usha was hesitant, partly due to their high-profile public life. The turning point came after the passing of Charlie Kirk, a friend of the family. Following Kirk’s death, Usha Vance reconsidered her stance on having more children, influenced by comments made by Erika Kirk, who expressed regrets about not having more children with her late husband.
In an interview with “CBS Sunday Morning,” Usha Vance acknowledged the impact of Erika Kirk’s words, describing them as “very powerful” and “moving.” She indicated that she had begun to be more open to the idea of another baby, though she clarified that this was a developing conversation between her and JD Vance rather than a singular decisive moment.
