Vice President JD Vance recently joined podcaster Joe Rogan for a conversation about the state of California under Governor Gavin Newsom. Vance shared how his experience driving through Los Angeles brought back memories of visits to a developing country.
Vance recounted an occasion where he was traveling through a less affluent area in Los Angeles on his way to an upscale Christmas event. The stark contrast struck him. He compared it to his experience visiting the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, noting the disparity between wealth and poverty. This led him to feel that some parts of America resemble a developing country more than he had imagined.
Reflecting on California’s current condition, Vance expressed sadness, especially considering his wife Usha’s roots in Southern California. He noted the state’s decline, particularly visible in Los Angeles. Once celebrated for its architecture and climate, the city now struggles with issues like the prominent skid row.
Rogan, who once lived in California, talked about his reasons for leaving. He mentioned people he knew who were eager to move but faced difficulties selling their homes. Rogan criticized Governor Newsom for downplaying the state’s issues, noting that California’s robust economy predates Newsom’s tenure.
Vance humorously suggested that examining the cost of renting a U-Haul truck to and from California could indicate the state’s attractiveness as a place to live. He added that while California offers many recreational activities and good weather, political problems have tarnished its appeal.
Rogan observed changes in Los Angeles, specifically the growth of the skid row area, known for homeless encampments and crime, claiming it expanded significantly.
Fox News Digital reached out to Governor Newsom’s office for comment, but there was no immediate response.
