On Monday, three Democrats from across Virginia campaigned together at a rally in Henrico County. The event highlighted the ongoing war in Iran as a significant election issue impacting more than just gas prices.
The war, unpopular among voters, affects global oil markets and challenges Republicans in the midterms. Virginia, a state with strong military ties, feels these effects beyond economic concerns.
Former Representative Elaine Luria stated, “This war is sending our sailors overseas under an administration that’s lying about the number of casualties.”
Luria aims to unseat Rep. Jen Kiggans in Virginia’s 2nd District, a region around Virginia Beach with key Navy bases. Similarly, Henrico prosecutor Shannon Taylor opposes Rep. Rob Wittman in the 1st District, critiquing his war stance. Former Representative Tom Perriello is contesting Rep. John McGuire in the 5th District, partially to end the war, a seat he lost in 2010.
Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a military veteran and potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, supported the effort. He urged Virginia Democrats to aim for a House majority. The party needs to gain four seats for control.
Buttigieg emphasized, “The road to that majority runs right through here, and it depends on you,” amid an energized crowd of over 200 attendees.
