Dr. Vincent Munster, a Dutch virologist praised for his role in developing the Covid vaccine, is currently under investigation by U.S. federal authorities. Charges have been filed against him for allegedly conspiring to smuggle deactivated mpox and other biological materials into the United States.
The complaint, which was revealed last week, indicates that Dr. Munster, 53, and a research assistant named Claude Kwe, 38, from Cameroon, were detained at Detroit airport. They had returned from the Republic of Congo during an mpox outbreak. Dr. Munster leads the virus ecology section at Rocky Mountain Laboratories, a part of the National Institutes of Health in Montana.
In recent developments, right-wing influencer Laura Loomer has accused the institute of attempting to hide the incident. This has led to a campaign against Dr. Munster and his workplace, gaining traction as a conservative cause. The campaign is also fueled by White Coat Waste Project, an animal rights group that initially unveiled the investigation based on claims from a whistle-blower. They argue that the virologist may pose a national security threat.
White Coat Waste has a history of criticizing Dr. Munster, accusing him of engaging in dangerous and controversial experiments on animals which they claim present significant biosafety and national security hazards.
