Maizy Agnello, an outside hitter from the University of Missouri, grew up surrounded by volleyball. Her mother, Hilary, played along Lake Michigan after her career at Penn State. This passion for the sport influenced Agnello deeply. “My mom would sometimes play here at the beach,” Agnello recalls. “She played with her college friend, and I always attended beach games, volleyball matches, and Cubs games.”
Agnello was particularly excited about Labor Day weekend, marking it on her calendar for a while. She and the Missouri Tigers were scheduled to face No. 1 Nebraska at Wrigley Field as part of the Big Ten/SEC Volleyball Challenge Week. Before the big match, Agnello and her teammates were cheering on Mizzou alumna Kylie DeBerg and Betsi Flint at the AVP League Championship at Oak Street Beach.
The Tigers, in pinstriped “Mizzou” jerseys, cheered enthusiastically from the temporary bleachers. “We’re all there together,” Agnello stated. “This experience is unforgettable. It’s a lifetime opportunity.” Agnello met DeBerg, exclaiming, “Kylie is so cool,” admiring her performance.
