The UnPopulist, an independent publication aiming to protect liberal democracy from authoritarianism globally, reports a growing cynicism among voters who supported Kamala Harris in the presidential election. This change is evident in the latest survey on populism conducted by the Institute for the Study of Modern Authoritarianism (ISMA).
The June survey reveals a significant increase in distrust toward American elites among Harris supporters. In 2024, before the election, 59% of prospective Harris voters strongly believed that at least one of six American elites had acted against people like them to serve their own selfish interests. By June of this year, this belief had risen to 69%, marking a 10-point increase.
This rise in cynicism is the only notable change among the four populist attitudes that ISMA’s survey monitors. The survey shows no significant increase in attachment to a political leader or acceptance of strong-arm tactics among the population.
