Warren Buffett Steps Back as Berkshire Hathaway Chairman

Warren Buffett announced he will step aside as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway. In a letter to shareholders, the 96-year-old investor stated he will become chairman emeritus while staying on the board. Buffett’s son, Howard Buffett, will take over as chairman due to a longstanding succession plan.

Buffett highlighted his son’s extensive experience, noting Howard’s 33 years of service as a Berkshire director. He stated, “Father Time always wins. He has, however, been generous with me. He has given me the opportunity to see Berkshire reach a point where I am more confident than ever about what lies ahead.” He added that he looks forward to continuing as a shareholder.

The change follows Buffett’s earlier decision to step down as CEO, with Greg Abel succeeding him. At 64, Abel now leads the conglomerate. Investment expert Adam Mead suggested that Buffett seems to be cushioning the impact of his eventual passing. Although there’s no disclosure of health issues, Mead pointed out that a minor illness could pose a concern given Buffett’s age.

Buffett’s legacy includes transforming an underperforming textile business into a global giant. Between 1965 and 2024, Berkshire’s stock surged over 5,500,000%. During this period, the S&P 500 increased by over 39,000%. By 2024, Berkshire became the first non-tech company valued at more than $1 trillion.

Berkshire’s shareholder meetings in Omaha routinely draw large crowds eager to hear Buffett speak. His reputation as the “Oracle of Omaha” and his personal wealth, totaling $145 billion, reinforce his status as a top investor.

Under Abel’s leadership, Berkshire aims to maintain its decentralized structure while pursuing new growth. However, its expanding size presents challenges in finding substantial acquisition opportunities.

Buffett’s succession plan took shape years back, with Abel selected to become CEO in May 2025. Michael Winters, a management professor, noted that Buffett planned his succession like he approaches investing, preparing well in advance.

In his letter, Buffett credited Abel with exceeding high expectations. Abel also praised Buffett’s unparalleled impact on the company and its stakeholders.
